The Kamakakuokalani Center for Hawaiian Studies invites applications for a full-time, permanent, tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant or Associate Professor level.

Kamakakuokalani is a global leader in Native Hawaiian and Pacific knowledge and ways of knowing, led by a faculty of committed kumu, scholars, activists, artists, and cultural practitioners. Our haumana are made up of the current and next generation of researchers, advocates, community leaders, and educators. The department offers BA and MA degrees.
The successful applicant in the Halau o Laka (HOL) area of concentration will be expected
to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in Hawaiian Visual Arts and Hana No'eau, provide mentorship and hands-on training, lead curricular development for the HOL area, and work collaboratively with colleagues in other Hawaiian Studies Areas of Concentration, Departments. and Schools, Qualified candidates should possess a promising record of research, a strong creative scholarship portfolio, and be able to work on related topics in the Hawaiian community.
The department is particularly interested in candidates who have experience working with students from diverse backgrounds, minimizing contemporary barriers to success, and increasing equity and completion rates among different demographics, including those from Indigenous communities.
Duties and Responsibilities- Teach assigned undergraduate and graduate courses currently offered at KCHS in Halau o Laka (HOL) with a focus on aspects of visual culture (customary and contemporary practices) emphasizing hana no'eau and the potential to teach in at least one of the additional fields -Kukulu Aupuni, Kumu Kahiki, Mo·olelo 'Oiwi, Malama 'Aina and which could include the introductory course of HWST 107.
- Develop and teach new courses in Halau o Laka with preference of adding to at least one of the other fields of Kukulu Aupuni, Kumu Kahiki, Mo'olelo 'Oiwi, and Malama 'Aina
- Advise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students.
- Participate on committees in charge of candidates for advanced degrees.
- Supervise independent study activities and off campus learning such as practicums and internships.
- Conduct and maintain an active professional art and research agenda in their field of expertise.
- Sustain strong community engagement/relations for teaching and research purposes.
- Participate in Departmental, School, and University committees.
- Provide service relevant to the individual's academic specialty to the university.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Director.
- PhD or MFA (Visual Culture/Studio focus), from a college or university of recognized standing in a field of study closely related to, or focusing on, Hawaiian Ancestral Knowledge including other areas that may be considered based on candidates strengths. Those who are ABD or in their final stages of MFA thesis at the time of hire may be considered.
- Demonstrated ability and expertise in teaching and research primarily in Halau o Laka and other related KCHS areas of concentration.
- Demonstrated ability to utilize educational technology in teaching (in person and/or online).
- Demonstrated creative scholarship and research experience including publication in Hawaiian Ancestral Knowledge.
- Evidence of ancestral knowledge , and historical topics in Hawai' i and the broader Moananuiakea.
- Proficiency in Hawaiian and English including the ability to translate and do research in Hawaiian.
- Poise and good address for meeting and conferring with others.
Associate Professor Minimum QualificationsAll minimum qualifications in the Assistant Professor rank plus minimum of four years of full-time college/university teaching at the rank of assistant professor (or equivalent), with evidence of increasing professional maturity.
Desirable Qualifications- Demonstrate competence and experience teaching in higher education.
- Experience teaching courses in higher education in areas such as Hawaiian Studies, Halau o Laka. and at least one of the Kukulu Aupuni, Kumu Kahiki, Malama •Aina and/or Mo·olelo 'Oiwi topics.
- Demonstrated research and creative scholarship/or publications in Hawaiian Ancestral Knowledge in the fields Halau o Laka, and one of the other concentrations Kukulu Aupuni, Kumu Kahiki. Malama •Aina, and/or Mo·olelo •Oiwi.
- Ability to teach and develop new courses in Hiilau o Laka and a preference of at least one in Kukulu Aupuni Kumu Kahiki. and/or Mo'o\elo •Oiwi.
- Advanced proficiency in 'Ole\o Hawai•i. potential to teach classes in Hawaiian Demonstrated ability in teaching in diverse modes and various formats (synchronous, asynchronous settings).
- Varied Experience in working with, and advocating for, the Hawaiian community on issues of art, visual representation history, land, culture, language and politics.
- Demonstrated ability to attract significant extramural funding and secure grants and contracts to build program base.
- Ability to assume leadership roles within the department such as serving on departmental and university committees.
- Experience in community engagement and/or outreach with underserved populations, with focus on Hawaiian, Moananuiakea, and Indigenous communities.
