The Dean’s Office seeks applicants for a non-tenure track Researcher to pursue development of advanced detector technologies and systems. The position is primarily focused on HgCdTe (MCT) and InGaAs based systems for future ground and spaceflight VIS/IR instrumentation for astronomy and planetary science. Initially technologies developed through this effort will target deployment within next-generation instruments mounted to existing telescopes on the summits of Mauna Kea and Haleakala. Additional opportunities to pursue the development, characterization, and deployment of X-ray detector systems that make use of room temperature semiconductors, such as CdZnTe (CZT) as well as advanced scintillators for gamma-ray and neutron measurements are also available. The position will report directly to Dr. Branden Allen (btallen@hawaii.edu) as part of the Advanced Detector Development and Research Lab (ADDER Lab), and is physically based in Hilo, Hawaii.
Duties and Responsibilities- Detector firmware development and verification.
- Detector calibration and characterization.
- Setup systems for detector testing and characterization.
- Assist with development of science and engineering goals for detector and telescope development.
- Provide mentorship for graduate research assistants and undergraduate student employees.
- Participate in preparing project reports, research proposals, technical reports, and journal articles.
- Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Astronomy, Astrophysics, Physics or a closely related field from a college or university of recognized standing.
- Familiarity with firmware development using a hardware design language such as SystemVerilog, Verilog, or VHDL.
- Experience with embedded software programming.
- Excellent scientific writing and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
- Accuracy, alertness and adaptability.
- Professionalism in meeting and conferring with others.
- Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with students and/or assistants when appropriate.
- Ability to assist with generating research reports, publications and grant proposals.
- Doctoral degree (or ABD) in Electrical Engineering, Astronomy, Astrophysics, Physics or a closely related field from a college or university of recognized standing.
- Experience with low noise electronics and electronics board development.
- Experience in VIS/IR and/or X-ray detectors, systems, and/or calibration facilities.
- Experience with vacuum systems.
- Experience with high energy or other astrophysical data analysis.
- Experience with planetary science data analysis.
- Knowledge of instrumentation for ground-based astronomy.
