Key Duties and Responsibilities
Extruder Operations:
- Execute start-up and shutdown procedures, ensuring all extruder zones are within 10°F of set points and tooling is correctly prepped and stored.
- Monitor and adjust operational parameters, including screw speeds, amperages, material feeds, and heater band performance.
- Perform routine equipment maintenance to minimize downtime and ensure safe, efficient operations.
Troubleshooting and Adjustments:
- Identify and resolve mechanical and process issues such as venting failures, material surging, and uneven cooling using diagnostic tools (e.g., thermocouples, calipers).
- Collaborate with maintenance teams on root-cause analysis of equipment failures and implement corrective actions.
- Proactively address process deviations to maintain consistent product quality and compliance.
Quality Control:
- Conduct dimensional and performance tests (e.g., stiffness, impact resistance) per ASTM D3034 and Vylon standards.
- Analyze and rectify deviations in profile height, wall thickness, and weld strength.
- Maintain accurate records of tests, inspections, and adjustments for quality assurance.
Team Leadership:
- Guide operators during production, start-up, and shutdown processes.
- Train team members on safety protocols, operational best practices, and quality standards.
- Foster a culture of continuous improvement by mentoring team members in troubleshooting and problem-solving techniques.
Safety and Compliance:
- Enforce the use of PPE (e.g., safety glasses, gloves, hearing protection) and adherence to safety guidelines.
- Identify and mitigate potential hazards, such as overheating zones or material buildup, to ensure a safe workspace.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent; technical training in plastics manufacturing preferred.
- 3-7 years of experience operating and troubleshooting extrusion equipment, particularly in PVC manufacturing.
- Strong mechanical aptitude, analytical skills, and a proactive problem-solving mindset.
- Ability to read and interpret technical documents such as work orders, quality control standards, and safety manuals.
- Leadership and communication skills to effectively manage and guide a production team.
