What are the responsibilities and job description for the Manager of Lifelong Learning and Accessibility position at Walker Art Center?

The Walker Art Center empowers people to experience the transformative possibilities of the art and ideas of our time and to imagine the world in new ways. In our over 125-year history, we have become one of the most celebrated art museums in the country and we are known for our innovative presentations and acclaimed collections of contemporary art across the spectrum of the visual, performing, and media arts.

The Manager of Lifelong Learning and Accessibility develops, plans, and delivers multidisciplinary programs for families, older adults, and people of all ages with disabilities. The Manager works collaboratively with the Associate Director of Learning and Accessibility and Lifelong Learning and Accessibility Programs Coordinator to coordinate and deliver Free First Saturday (the Walker’s monthly family day), Sensory Friendly Sunday (a monthly program for people of all ages with sensory sensitivities, autism spectrum disorder, and/or neuroprocessing differences), and other programs for intergenerational audiences, and envision and conceptualize future program directions, growing programs for older adults and people with disabilities.


WHAT YOU GET TO DO 

Program Strategy:

  • Develop programming for Free First Saturday and Sensory Friendly Sunday that is inclusive, culturally-responsive, and provides visitors an opportunity to be creative and see themselves reflected in the Walker’s programs and exhibitions. Iteratively augment, improve and revitalize family programs in response to community feedback and evaluation data.
  • Work with the Associate Director of Learning and Accessibility to expand and deliver programming for older adults and D/deaf and disabled community members.
  • Expand programming for intergenerational audiences hosted offsite in partnership with internal and external stake holders.
  • Support institutional planning related to accessibility for D/deaf and disabled visitors.
  • Work with Communications and Content Departments to develop timely content and plans for advertisements, press coverage, web content, and other promotional materials.
  • Work closely with the Associate Director of Learning and Accessibility to develop and facilitate training opportunities.
  • Evaluate programs using a variety of techniques and analyze learnings to translate them into project development.

Program Management:

  • Develop and coordinate the production of multilingual resources for intergenerational audiences such as family activity guides, social narratives, sensory maps, etc.
  • Participate in PELI Department planning and budgeting activities as assigned.
  • Support the development, implementation, and administration of grants.
  • Share information across the organization and collaborate to support initiatives and practices that welcome patrons of varied ages and abilities.
  • Provide event support for programs as needed.

People Management

  • Recruit, train, and supervise the Lifelong Learning and Accessibility Programs Coordinator.
  • Direct the work of volunteers and contracted artists as needed.
  • Attend all required leadership training and meetings.
  • Provide inspirational leadership in alignment with Walker’s Mission and Values, Performance Values, Equity Action Plan, and Strategic Plan.

External Partnerships:

  • Develop partnerships with Twin Cities organizations to support and collaboratively develop multigenerational programming.
  • Maintain positive working relationships with Twin Cities Artist communities; research new teaching artists and performers for programs.
  • Facilitate community participation and logistics for soliciting input from local communities.
  • Stay informed about other relevant family, creative aging, and accessibility programs locally, nationally, and internationally.

WHAT WE NEED IN YOU 

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in disability studies, education, fine arts, or related field.
  • 3-5 years experience developing and administering educational programming.
  • Experience working with people of all ages with disabilities in personal and/or professional settings.
  • Exceptional communication skills in various mediums.
  • Demonstrated organizational and planning skills.
  • A demonstrated track record of successfully cultivating relationships and collaborating with partner organizations.
  • Able to work proactively and independently and quickly adapt to a range of situations.
  • Familiarity with art materials and art-making techniques.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (word, excel, email).
  • Must be available to work a flexible schedule with hours and days determined and required by programming.
  • Must be available to work the first Saturday and second Sunday morning of every month.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience managing and mentoring staff.
  • Experience in applying the principles of universal design for learning and culturally-competent teaching techniques to the development of educational resources and experiences for a variety of audiences with unique learning needs.
  • Familiarity with assistive technology, adaptive tools, etc. Fluency in a language in addition to English with preference for Hmong, Somali, Spanish, and/or American Sign Language.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS This position is considered full-time, exempt. As a exempt position, it is noteligible for overtime pay. The minimum compensation for this role is $55,00 annually. The Walker offers a wide range of benefits for both part-time and full-time employees.

This position is not eligible for relocation assistance.
