What are the responsibilities and job description for the Academic Advisor, Athletics MBB/WBB position at Western Kentucky University?
Western Kentucky University, a member of Conference USA and a Football Bowl Subdivision NCAA member institution, seeks to hire an individual for the full-time position of Academic Advisor, Athletics. This is a 12-month, full-time position. This position will report directly to the Assistant Vice President - Academic Advising and Retention Center. Applicants must have a commitment to and responsibility for adhering to all rules and regulations of WKU, Conference USA and the NCAA.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
The following duties are customary for this position, but are not to be construed as all-inclusive. Duties may be added, deleted, and assigned based on management discretion and institutional needs. The university expects that all position responsibilities should be carried out in full compliance with all such rules and regulations.
- Serve as an academic advisor for men's and women's basketball
- Help students understand university and NCAA degree requirements and develop a responsible approach to academic planning
- Assist student-athletes in selecting and declaring an academic major
- Assist in assessing student-athlete course performance
- Assist and advise student-athletes each semester during the pre-registration process by monitoring their class schedules for graduate requirements and special athletic needs, such as travel and practice times
- Access to and monitor academic records, develop information regarding the success and challenges of each student-athlete and provide data as requested regarding the academic progress of student-athletes
- Communicate with coaches and Compliance and assist with tracking the admission status, assessment and pre-registration of all new student-athletes
- Assist coaches in the recruitment process of student-athletes by sharing academic information and by meeting prospective student-athletes for campus visits
- Assist with on-campus recruitment visits of prospects and work with Compliance regarding assessing their admissions status for WKU and academic eligibility status by NCAA standards
- Assist student-athletes who have exhausted their eligibility in completing their degree at WKU
- Assist upperclassmen in all graduation matters (e.g., career counseling, letters of recommendation, post-graduate testing and application, etc.)
- Meet regularly with student-athlete to discuss time management, including but not limited to their class schedule, study hall time period, strength and conditioning, practice time, etc.
- Occasional team travel to assist with any academic issues or questions that may arise
- Organize study hall session for student-athletes. Also, assist with supervision of tutorial personnel
- Assist with career development programming in conjunction with Life Skills and Student-Athlete Development
- Serve as a liaison with various departments on campus (e.g., Compliance, Admissions, faculty, deans, and Registrar)
- Develop academic assistance models and programs for student-athletes, which include but are not limited to tutorial services and orientation(s) based on need
- Refer students to other office and campus resources as needed
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned
Knowledge and Skills Considered Essential for Success:
- Prior experience working in collegiate academic advising/counseling

- Ability to handle confidential and sensitive situations with tact and diplomacy

- Must be self-motivated and team-oriented

Job Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree
- A minimum of two years of experience in collegiate athletics academic counseling.
Additional Information:
Salary Range: $40,000 - $45,000
