Position Overview:
The Staff Accountant assists with all general accounting and financial activities including journal entry preparation, general ledger maintenance, account reconciliation and analysis, cash management, fixed assets, internal and external reporting, and forecasting. Support is also provided to service line leadership and teams to help analyze and improve operations. Adheres to the highest level of confidentiality regarding all financial transactions.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
When multiple team members hold the role of Staff Accountant, task listed under Specific Functions may be assigned to a particular individual with back up functions performed by other team members.
- Demonstrates a self-start attitude geared toward flexibility and adaptation to change.
- Demonstrates a strong and positive work ethic that promotes department cohesiveness and morale.
- Prepares and processes general ledger journal entries timely and accurately.
- Prepares monthly account reconciliations to general ledger or other source.
- Maintains and analyzes operational statistical information; i.e., volume stats, payroll, and contract labor hours.
- Maintains knowledge of the general ledger chart of accounts.
- Insures account coding accuracy for all transactions. Has the authority to change or modify account distribution and informs individuals impacted of any changes made.
- Assists with report development and distribution of monthly internal operational reports.
- Assists with annual audit preparation.
- Assists with annual Medicare and Medicaid cost report preparation and other regulatory reporting.
- Actively participates in quarterly forecast development.
- Provides analysis for assigned areas.
- Engages with appropriate individuals to gain understanding of operations and assist with initiatives upon request. Attends focus board meetings as time and other priorities permit.
- Fields questions and inquiries from internal and external customers in a timely manner.
- Actively participates in software upgrades or deployments. Maintains and exercises knowledge of software features, participates in user groups when available. Shares responsibility of system set up per user role authority.
- Utilizes lean tools to help improve accounting and operational processes.
- Other duties as assigned.
Specific Functions:
- Maintains daily cash activity to assist with cash management functions. Reconciles to subledger activity and communicates discrepant items with Business Office.
- Informs Manager, Director, or CFO of unusual cash activity and makes cash transfers as authorized.
- Prepares invoices for miscellaneous non-patient billings and monitors miscellaneous AR activity.
- Prepares weekly bank deposit for miscellaneous non-AR receipts.
- Posts transactions and monitors interface activity between Cerner application and general ledger. Troubleshoots issues and discrepancies for resolution of problem.
- Maintains fixed asset system detail, recording additions and deletions; assures depreciation calculations are accurate.
- Maintains unclaimed property records, sends notifications and files reports as required.
- Assists with accounts payable processes as requested.

Skills and Experience:
Required:
- Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Accounting with two years or more of related work experience
- Excellent computer skills to include Word, Excel, Access or other databases, Outlook
- Must be proficient in using accounting software
