Job Purpose
Construct, erect, install, and repair structures and fixtures of wood, plywood, and wallboard, using carpenter's hand tools and power tools. Laminate layers of fiberglass for boat decks and hulls, or other products.
Tasks
- Pat or press layers of saturated mat or cloth, using brushes or hands, and smooth out wrinkles and air bubbles with hands, smooth seams, using rollers or squeegees.
- Mix catalysts into resins, and saturate cloth and mats with mixtures, using brushes.
- Bond wood reinforcing strips to decks and cabin structures of watercraft, using resin-saturated fiberglass.
- Confer with supervisor to coordinate operations and activities within or between departments.
- Inspect materials, products, or equipment to detect defects or malfunctions.
- Follow established safety rules and regulations and maintain a safe and clean environment.
- Study specifications in blueprints, sketches, or building plans to prepare project layout and determine dimensions and materials required.
- Measure and mark cutting lines on materials, using a ruler, pencil, chalk, and marking gauge.
- Shape or cut materials to specified measurements, using hand tools, machines, or power saws.
- Install structures or fixtures using carpenters' hand or power tools.
- Verify trueness of structure
Detailed Work Activities
- Clean production equipment and work site.
- Measure dimensions of completed products or workpieces to verify conformance to specifications.
- Repair parts or assemblies.
- Select production input materials.
- Trim excess material from workpieces.
- Calculate specific material, equipment, or labor requirements for production.
- Confer with others to resolve production problems or equipment malfunctions.
- Monitor and inspect equipment operation to ensure proper functioning and repairs needed.
- Apply decorative or textured finishes or coverings.
- Apply material to fill gaps in surfaces.
- Assemble temporary equipment or structures.
- Build construction forms or molds.
- Cut wood components for installation.
- Install wooden structural components.
- Mix substances or compounds needed for work activities.
- Remove worn, damaged or outdated materials from work areas.

Work Environment
The employee is occasionally expected to work near moving mechanical parts. The employee is expected to frequently work in high, precarious places; toxic or caustic chemicals. The employee is regularly around fumes or airborne particles and outdoor weather conditions. Positive completion of a Pulmonary Function Test could be required for this position.
Qualification
Education and Experience
Years of Experience: 2 years experience minimum requirement in Boat Building or completion of Boatbuilding Program of Study
Education: High School/G.E.D
Preferred: Marine Trade Certification or Completed Program of Study required in Boat Building, Carpentry, Composites/Lamination, and/or Marine Technology.
