Administrator/Trainee Ophthalmic Technician - Clane with support for Athlone/Mullingar

IoES is currently recruiting for a dynamic individual to join their team as a Medical Administrator/Ophthalmic Technician. This role will primarily be based in Clane; however, travel to our clinics in Athlone and Mullingar will be required. Mileage will be paid for travel between locations.

The role involves a blend of administrative and clinical responsibilities, including managing patient appointments, insurance billing and supporting clinical activities. You will also receive both hands-on training to support clinical work and online theory-based training to become a certified Ophthalmic Technician. The successful applicant will be responsible for ensuring high patient care, adhering to clinical protocols, and maintaining administrative accuracy throughout the patient journey. Previous Ophthalmology or medical experience is not required, as full training will be provided.

Duties and responsibilities

Administration duties

  • Managing a busy clinical & surgical appointment schedule.
  • Processing insurance billing forms and invoices for all surgical and clinical procedures.
  • Live scheduling of clinical and surgical appointments efficiently.
  • Accurate data entry of patient information into various systems
  • Working to strict process protocols to ensure patients receive the best standard of care.
  • Ensure all patients receive the highest level of service from IoES before and after their consultations and surgeries.

Clinical duties

  • Perform complete ophthalmic history and preliminary exams, sub-specialty tests.
  • Perform pre-exam testing to include visual acuity assessment, including pinhole, visual field testing, pupillary dilation, and all other patient services as requested by the Consultant including special tests such as dry eye testing.
  • Perform and specialised testing such as visual fields, ophthalmic photography, optical coherence tomography (OCT), Optical Biometry of different model types.
  • Administering medications and topical treatments.
  • Educate patients regarding administration of medications and pre- and post-operative instructions as directed by Consultant.
  • Assist with maintenance of clinical examination equipment.
  • Check expiration date and inventory as necessary.
  • Open and close exam rooms daily, ensuring that equipment is wiped down in an appropriate manner, battery powered instruments are seated properly in re-charge wells and slit lamps are switched off under covers.
  • Follow all safety procedures as per guidelines.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills as well as a neat and professional appearance.
  • Position requires a great deal of initiative and the flexibility to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Employees must maintain patient confidentiality.

  • Maintain a clean and neat working environment, ensuring high standards of housekeeping.
  • Open and close exam rooms daily
  • Follow all safety procedures as per guidelines
  • Maintain stock in exam rooms
  • Perform other duties as necessary

Qualifications & Experience:

  • No prior Ophthalmology or medical experience required; full training is provided.
  • Once training is complete, you will be required to sit the JCAHPO exams to become a Certified Ophthalmic Technician.
  • Customer service skills.
  • Excellent IT skills.

Job Types: Full-time, Permanent

Pay: €29,000.00 per year
