Job Summary
The associate editor will be a key contributor to Bowdoin College’s award-winning magazine and will be chiefly responsible for the class news and Forward sections. The magazine is one of the College’s most effective means of communicating with alumni and other community members.
Working with the editor, designer, managing editor, senior editor, and other contributors as part of a collegial and curious team, the associate editor will also propose and develop feature ideas, write and produce material for print and web, and serve as a member of the overall writing staff for the office of communications and public affairs.
The associate editor engages regularly with the Office of Alumni Relations, faculty, senior leadership, and key staff across campus to develop and produce timely material for the magazine that is both thought-provoking and relevant to its key audience, and also collaborates with other communications staff on developing compelling and effective storytelling across various other channels.

- Salary Range for this position is expected to be: Minimum $76,000- Maximum $87,000

Education/Skills Requirements
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree (preferably in English, journalism, or a related field).
- Exceptional and proven writing and editorial skills.
- Strong organization and management skills.
- Superior communication and interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency in word processing.
- Must be creative, accurate, thorough, dependable, and able to meet deadlines in consideration of clear and organized advance planning/preparation.
- Must be flexible and adaptable, comfortable dealing with situations that require quick responses and sound judgment.
- A valid driver’s license and the ability to meet the requirements of the College’s Motor Vehicle Use Policy.
Experience Requirements and/or Equivalents
Required:
- A minimum of 4-7 years of work experience in a related field.
- Understanding of and experience with graphics and publishing software, as well as with publishing systems.
- Experience with content management systems, social media, and digital communication platforms.
- Ability to create digital content.
- Demonstrated success in generating ideas for stores of all kinds—different topics, different lengths, different formats, etc.
- Strong project management skills—ability to ensure that projects are delivered on time and on budget without sacrificing the quality of the work.
- Impeccable interpersonal and collaboration communication skills across all campus constituencies.
Preferred:
- 7 years of work experience in a related field.
Standard Work Days and Hours
- This is an exempt position requiring time commitment necessary to satisfactorily complete job requirements.
- Hours are primarily Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
- Evening and weekend work is occasionally required in order to meet the requirements of the position.
- This position is full-time, year round (40 hours/52 weeks, 1.00 FTE).
- Hybrid eligible position after three months—in the office 2-3 days each week.
