KIMT-TV in Mason City, Iowa, is seeking a meticulous and technically proficient Master Control Operator to ensure the seamless and accurate transmission of our on-air product. This crucial role is responsible for monitoring the quality and regulatory compliance of broadcasts, troubleshooting equipment malfunctions, and preparing programming for playout. The successful candidate will play a vital role in delivering high-quality content to our viewers in North Central Iowa and Southeast Minnesota.
Principal Duties & Responsibilities:
- Operate and monitor a variety of broadcast equipment, including video switchers, router panels, server-based distribution systems, multi-channel automation systems, and all related broadcast hardware and software.
- Perform precise live on-air switching as required for news, sports, and other programming.
- Manage server-based content distribution workflows to ensure timely and accurate playout.
- Maintain continuous on-air programming, including the management of live broadcasts and ensuring smooth transitions.
- Diligently monitor broadcast transmitters and maintain detailed operational logs in compliance with FCC regulations.
- Ingest and perform file transfers of programs, commercials, and other content, adhering to strict quality control standards.
- Proactively monitor on-air signals for technical issues and troubleshoot equipment malfunctions efficiently to minimize downtime.
- Prepare playlists and schedules within the automation system for accurate and timely program playout.
- Collaborate effectively with news, production, and engineering teams to ensure smooth broadcast operations.
Specialized Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- Exceptional attention to detail and a strong commitment to accuracy.
- Thorough knowledge of PC systems, video equipment, and related broadcast software applications.
- Ability to learn and effectively utilize broadcast engineering test equipment such as vector scopes, waveform monitors, and other diagnostic tools.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to remain calm and effective under pressure.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to interact effectively with colleagues.
- Understanding of FCC rules and regulations related to broadcast operations is a plus.
Education/Experience:
- Preferred: An Associate's or Bachelor's degree in a technical field such as Broadcast Engineering, Television Production, or a related discipline.
- Preferred: A minimum of one to three years of experience working as a Master Control Operator or in a related broadcast operations role. However, motivated entry-level candidates with relevant technical aptitude will also be considered, and training will be provided.
- Familiarity with automation systems (experience with Grass Valley or similar systems is a plus).
- Knowledge of server-based video operations and file transfer protocols.
Training/Equipment:
- The successful candidate will receive training on KIMT-TV's specific broadcast equipment and software.
Work Environment/Mental/Physical Requirements:
- This position operates in a dynamic, deadline-driven environment with potential for high-pressure situations, especially during live events or technical issues.
- Must be able to work independently and as part of a team.
- Flexibility to work various shifts, including weekends, holidays, and overnight hours, as required to maintain 24/7 broadcast operations.
- May involve sitting for extended periods while monitoring equipment.
