Job Summary: Under the supervision of the Health Center Nurse (HCN) and/or the Health Center Nurse II (HCNII), the Medical Assistant (MA) of Omni Family Health (Omni) provides support to a growing network of state-of-the-art health centers serving California’s Central Valley. As a member of the organization’s Medical Department, the MA is part of the team concept in the center’s health delivery system, which is devoted to the delivery of primary care in an ambulatory setting with an emphases on prevention and health maintenance. The MA is an allied health care professional who performs administrative, clerical, and technical supportive services in assistance to the clinical staff as required in accordance with the established policies and procedures.
Job Duties:
- Provides clinical and clerical support to the clinical staff and patients.
- Reviews provider schedule and prepares exam rooms accordingly based on procedure and/or visit.
- Prepares patients for examination by performing preliminary physical tests; taking height, weight, blood pressure, temperature, and measuring vital signs.
- Verifies patient information by interviewing patient, recording medical history, symptoms, and confirming purpose of visit.
- Assist the clinical staff with performing exams and procedures.
- Reviews provider notes, completes lab orders, referrals, medication refills, and other necessary forms.
- Administers medications and injections for written orders.
- Collects and prepares laboratory samples and/or performs Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) waived testing.
- Schedules follow-up appointments and/or any other services ordered by the provider.
- Cleans and restocks the exam room after each patient, including disinfecting surfaces and sterilizing instruments/equipment.
- Keeps supplies ready by inventorying stock. Ensures exam rooms are well supplied.
- Keeps equipment operating efficiently by following operating instructions, troubleshooting breakdowns, maintaining supplies, performing basic preventative maintenance, and notifying leadership of any necessary repairs.
- Assists the medical staff in patient education and family planning counseling.
- Provides HIV/Antibody counseling in accordance with established protocols and in compliance with State and Federal requirements.
- Responsible for securing patient information by completing and safeguarding medical records and keeping patient information confidential.
- Maintains a safe, secure, and healthy work environment by establishing and following standards and procedures and complying with legal regulations.
- Performs clinic opening and closing procedures.
- Ensures the department provides cohesive support to the mission, vision, and core values while delivering superior customer service.
- Works closely with all corporate branches, divisions, and/or departments in accordance with Omni’s policies and procedures.
- Other duties and/or responsibilities as the MA may be assign from time to time.
- Must be able to travel and work at various Omni clinic locations.
Additional Duties:
- Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Compliance: Responsible for maintaining abreast of and in compliance with all HIPAA regulations and requirements.
- Compliance: Ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations.
- Quality Assurance/Quality Improvement (QA/QI): Participate as required in QA/QI activities and contribute towards the overall quality improvement initiatives of the organization.
- Information Technology (IT): May be required to learn and use the electronic health record and its components as required by the job functions and highlighted in the policies and procedures. These components include NextGen, Practice Management System (PMS), Quality Systems Inc. (QSI), and other electronic features as they are developed and implemented, as applicable to work environment.
- Patient Centered Medical Home (PCMH): All employees will participate in PCMH at Omni Family Health.
- Audits: Contribute to required Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), Operational Site Visit (OSV), The Joint Commission (JC), and other audit events.
Qualifications, Education, and Experience:
- High School Diploma or GED certificate.
- Completion of training consistent with the requirements for Medical Assistants as specified by the Medical Board of California:
- Under a licensed physician, podiatrist, registered nurse, licensed vocational nurse, a physician assistant or a qualified medical assistant.
- In a postsecondary or adult education program in a public school authorized by the Department of Education, in a community college program provided for in the Education Code, or a postsecondary institution accredited or approved by the Bureau for Private Postsecondary and Vocational Education in the Department of Consumer Affairs.
- Current and valid Venipuncture certification.
- Current and valid Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification.
- Current and valid Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred.
- Possess a valid CA Driver’s License, along with proof of insurance.
