Job Summary
The Food Science department is seeking a Research Assistant, Fermentation Science Specialist. In this role, you will research activities in the Fermentation Science area and work with other team members to complete research and engagement projects related to fermentation science in general. This position involves general laboratory work including beverage and food sample organization, preparation and analysis. As the research assistant, you will be responsible for conducting an analysis of research and engagement samples for grant projects and others. The analysis includes but is not limited to, sugar analysis, alcohol content, brix value, sensory testing, food compositional analysis, and other carbohydrate analysis methods. You will also be responsible for assisting to maintain laboratory instruments and maintain a safe and clean laboratory work environment in the fermentation laboratory. In addition, you will organize data collected from experiments and create a well-organized data file and simple data reports and help with the demonstrations and presentations about fermentation science within the department.
What We're Looking For:
- Bachelor’s degree in food science or related field
- 1 year of experience in laboratory work
- In lieu of degree, an equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered (Associate's 3 years of experience; HS/GED 5 years of experience)
- Self-motivated, and able to utilize independent judgment to solve problems
- Excellent organizational skills to effectively handle multiple ongoing tasks and strive for continuous improvement
- Strong time management skills with emphasis on accuracy and attention to detail
- Must have the ability to multitask and be flexible to accomplish daily tasks
- Basic skills in word processing and data entry and the ability to run common computer application
- Working familiarity with Office software, especially Excel
- Familiarity with basic chemistry, laboratory analysis, and laboratory safety
- Ability to communicate effectively
Nice to Have:
- Experience in fermentation science or food analysis
- Provide written text to describe experiments, results, and protocols
- Knowledge of basic food chemistry, structure, and processing and how they interact to impact product quality and characteristics
- Ability to analyze and interpret data
