Middle School GATE Specialist

Summary

The gifted specialist works closely with staff at their assigned schools to provide instructional support for teachers of students identified as gifted and advanced-ability learners. The gifted specialist will be assigned to serve in designated schools. Work is performed under regular supervision.

Minimum Qualifications

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with a master’s degree in an acceptable field.

Endorsements in elementary, middle-level, or a secondary core content area and gifted education endorsement are required.

A minimum of five years of successful teaching experience, including at least two years in programs serving academically advanced students, is required.

The candidate should have participated in professional development such as workshops for gifted curriculum.

Possession of or ability to acquire appropriate license(s), certificate(s), and endorsement(s) for the position as required by the Commonwealth of Virginia and School Board.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Thorough knowledge of subject(s) taught; thorough knowledge of the principles and methodology of effective teaching, including:

• differentiation of instruction for gifted students;
• characteristics of gifted students;
• thorough knowledge of school division rules, regulations, and procedures;
• ability to establish and maintain standards of behavior;
• ability to deliver articulate oral presentations and written reports;
• demonstrates comfort with initiating tasks and being self-directed;
• ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, students, and parents;
• able to use technology for communication and record-keeping,
• ability to use technology as an instructional tool to provide robust learning opportunities for students;
• ability to serve as a liaison between schools and the gifted program.
