POSITION SUMMARY
The Assistant Controller will be responsible for supporting the SVP/Controller and CFO with finance, accounting, budgeting, and financial reporting activities. This position is responsible for ensuring that vendor invoices are paid in a timely and accurate manner, that all customer invoices are accurate and collected on a timely basis, and that all routine journal entries and balance sheet reconciliations are completed to meet monthly and annual close deadlines. This role is also responsible for maintaining the accounting policies and procedures manual and working with members of the team to identify and implement innovation into routine processes in accordance with U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles. The individual in this role will review transactions/contracts to determine and document proper accounting treatment or review treatment proposed by staff. This role will support the SVP/Controller serving as a financial statement audit contact and ensure all audit schedules are completed on a timely basis.
RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES
- Manage accounts payable to ensure vendor invoices and employee expense reports are paid in a timely and accurate manner and all staff inquiries are addressed in a timely manner. Ensure IRS Form 1099 filings are completed in a timely and accurate manner.
- Manage accounts receivable to ensure timely and accurate creation of customer invoices, monitoring of outstanding balances is conducted, and collections are completed in a timely basis.
- Manage the cash receipts process to ensure cash is applied appropriately to outstanding receivables, revenue, or as applicable.
- Manage GL staff to ensure that all routine journal entries and balance sheet reconciliations are completed accurately, efficiently, and to meet all monthly and annual close deadlines. Perform any other related duties as may be assigned by the SVP and Controller.
- Ensure proper internal controls are in place and followed related to functions/processes such as AR, AP, and GL accounting.
- Lead and optimize processes and procedures of the AR, AP, and GL teams to identify ways to improve efficiency and become less reliant on manual processes.
- Work with team members and other departments to implement changes and improvements to allow for efficiency and enhanced productivity.
- Analytical review of monthly financial statements to identify significant variances and provide explanations.
- Coordinate and support the annual financial statement audits of the NAACP and its affiliates; prepare and/or review audit schedules, help to answer auditor's questions, and respond to audit requests in a timely manner.
- Support compliance with all local and national tax regulations, including the 990 and state/local taxes.
- Provide strong customer service on an individual basis or through team members by responding to all inquiries in an accurate and timely manner from internal and external individuals.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree required.
- A minimum of 6-8 years of work experience in finance/accounting, preferably with general operations of a non-profit entity
- Proven knowledge of accounting theory and practice, particularly nonprofit accounting and reporting.
- Supervisory experience of general ledger, AR, and AP duties.
- Demonstrated experience in being a strong term plyer in addition to managing, developing, and empowering staff
- Ability to translate and communicate complex financial concepts to all levels of the organization;
- Ability to work well with fellow team members and build gaps in relationships between departments.
- Experience with SAGE intacct, Bill.com and/or ADP is preferred; and
- Advanced level of MS products, cloud -based accounting software preferred
